What is an End-of-Life Doula?

1

INELDA, the organization through which I trained with, defines an end-of-life doula as a nonmedical companion who provides personalized and compassionate support to individuals, families, and their circles of care as they encounter and navigate death, loss, and mortality. An end-of-life doula advocates self-determination and imparts psychosocial, emotional, spiritual, and practical care to empower dignity throughout the dying process.

VimBridge exists to help people start to think about mortality. By thinking and recognizing our mortality we can work to live our fullest and happiest life now. Currently, VimBridge offers workshops for individuals and groups to help consider what brings them happiness, if any unfinished work needs to be done, any words shared and what would bring peace at life’s end.

How did VimBridge get started?

4

VimBridge is new, but at the same time it started many years ago with a personal experience of witnessing a loved one with their end-of-life. This loss started a curiosity and personal belief that death is the unknown frontier still since no one really knows what “happens” after although many cultures and systems offer explanations.

Having discovered the work of end-of-life doulas and attended training, the work of VimBridge was formulated. The ideas, concepts and exercises in the workshops were inspired by the groups Going with Grace https://goingwithgrace.com/ and INELDA https://inelda.org/
